Ein Stromrelais ist ein elektromagnetischer Schalter, der in Steuerungssystemen für elektrische Anlagen eingesetzt wird. Diese Relais dienen häufig als Sensoren (Stromsensor-/Überwachungsrelais) zur Überwachung des Stromflusses in industriellen und anderen sicherheitsrelevanten Anlagen. Sie verhindern mithilfe von Stromrelais Fehlfunktionen, die durch zu hohen oder zu niedrigen Stromfluss (Überstrom bzw. Unterstrom) verursacht werden.
Fließt zu viel Strom durch eine mit einem Stromrelais ausgestattete Maschine, schaltet sich das Relais ein und reguliert den Stromfluss im angeschlossenen Stromkreis. Dadurch wird die zulässige Stromstärke im System reduziert. Dieselbe Funktionalität kann auch in Maschinen oder anderen elektrischen Geräten eingesetzt werden, um Schäden durch Unterstrom zu verhindern.
Stromrelais können sowohl für Wechselstrom- als auch für Gleichstromsysteme verwendet werden. Durch ihre Fähigkeit, Geräteausfälle aufgrund von Überstrom und Unterstrom zu verhindern, stellen sie ein wirksames Gefahrenabwehrsystem an Arbeitsplätzen dar, an denen eine Fehlfunktion der Geräte zu Verletzungen führen könnte.
